A gasless swap lets you trade tokens on a decentralized exchange without holding or spending native gas tokens. Instead of paying ETH, MATIC, or SOL for each transaction, the gas cost is covered by a third party. On Definitive's onchain trading terminal, gas is sponsored on all supported chains — so you can trade without a native token balance.
"Gasless" doesn't mean the blockchain skips gas. Every onchain transaction still requires gas — the network needs computational resources to process it. What changes is who pays.
How gas sponsorship works technically. Gasless systems use a mechanism called meta-transactions or ERC-4337 account abstraction (on EVM chains) to separate the user who signs the transaction from the account that pays for it. The user signs a message authorizing the swap; a relayer or gas paymaster submits it onchain and covers the gas cost.
Who sponsors gas on Definitive? Definitive sponsors gas directly — it's part of the platform's value proposition. When you execute a trade on Definitive, the platform covers the network fee so you don't have to. This applies across all nine supported chains: Base, Arbitrum, Ethereum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB, HyperEVM, and Solana.
What you still need. Gasless means you don't need native gas tokens. You still need the source token you want to swap. If you want to swap USDC to ETH, you need USDC in your wallet — Definitive covers the gas, not the swap capital.
Why platforms offer gasless trading. Gas friction is one of the biggest barriers to DeFi adoption for new users and institutional participants alike. For institutions managing multiple wallets across multiple chains, maintaining gas token balances is operational overhead. Gasless trading removes that friction entirely.
For a deeper technical explanation, see What is Gasless Crypto Trading.
Step 1: Connect your wallet Go to definitive.fi. Connect your wallet — Definitive supports any EOA (MetaMask, Rabby, Coinbase Wallet, etc.) and institutional custody providers: Fireblocks, Fordefi, Safe (multisig), and Squads.
You do not need ETH or any native token in your wallet. You only need the token you intend to swap.
Step 2: Select your chain Choose which blockchain you want to trade on. Definitive supports: Base, Arbitrum, Ethereum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB, HyperEVM, and Solana. The interface updates to reflect available tokens and liquidity on the selected chain.
Step 3: Choose your token pair Select the token you're selling and the token you're buying. Definitive's smart order routing queries 100+ DEXs and 15+ offchain private market makers (PMMs) to find the best available price across all integrated liquidity sources.
Step 4: Enter your swap amount Input how much of the source token you want to sell. Definitive shows you an estimated output, current price impact, and the best route found across all integrated liquidity.
Step 5: Review the fee breakdown For major assets and stablecoins on Ethereum, Base, Solana, and Arbitrum, Definitive charges no protocol fee. For other assets, fees start at 85 bps and decrease to 25 bps at T1 with staked EDGE. Gas fees are zero — they're covered by Definitive regardless of chain or asset.
Step 6: Set slippage tolerance Choose how much price movement you'll accept between signing and execution. For liquid pairs (ETH/USDC, BTC/USDT), 0.5% is usually sufficient. For lower-liquidity tokens, set 1–2% to ensure execution.
Step 7: Sign and execute Confirm the swap details and sign with your wallet. Because Definitive sponsors gas, you don't sign a standard transaction — you sign a message that authorizes the swap. Definitive's relayer submits it onchain and pays the gas cost.
Step 8: Confirm execution The swap executes onchain and settles to your wallet. Definitive's post-trade dashboard records the trade with full details: fill price, size, route, fees, and onchain transaction hash. Your PnL tracking updates automatically.
Chains with gasless execution on Definitive:
Gas is sponsored on all nine chains. You can switch between chains in the interface without reconnecting your wallet, and you don't need to maintain gas balances on any of them.
Token support. Definitive supports any token with liquidity on its integrated DEXs and PMMs. This includes major assets (ETH, BTC, SOL), stablecoins (USDC, USDT, DAI), and long-tail tokens across all supported chains. If a token has an onchain liquidity pool on an integrated DEX, Definitive can route swaps through it.
Fee-free pairs. Trading is completely free (no protocol fee, no gas) for major assets and stablecoins on Ethereum, Base, Solana, and Arbitrum. This includes pairs like ETH/USDC, WBTC/USDC, SOL/USDC, and similar liquid pairs on those chains.
Gasless trading on Definitive is comprehensive, but there are a few limitations worth understanding before you rely on it.
Gas sponsorship is contingent on platform operation. Definitive covers gas as a service. If the platform experiences downtime or policy changes, gas sponsorship could be affected. This is a centralized dependency — the underlying trade settles onchain, but the gas mechanism requires Definitive's infrastructure.
Not all tokens can be gasless in all configurations. For unusual token types or chains with non-standard transaction formats, the gasless mechanism may not always apply. Definitive's interface will indicate if gas sponsorship is unavailable for a specific trade.
Gasless doesn't mean instant. Transactions still need to be included in a block. On congested chains (Ethereum mainnet during peak periods), this can take longer than expected. The gasless mechanism affects who pays — not how fast the network processes the transaction.
Slippage and MEV risk remain. Gas sponsorship removes one friction point, but other trade execution risks remain. Your swap is still subject to slippage, and on chains without MEV protection, sandwich attacks are possible. Definitive routes through MEV-protected paths where available. See MEV Protected Trading for how to minimize this risk.
Position size considerations. Very large swaps — even gasless ones — will still experience price impact if the order size is large relative to available liquidity. For large positions, consider using TWAP orders to spread execution over time. See What is a TWAP Order in Crypto for how TWAP reduces impact on large trades.
Gasless means you don't pay gas. For major assets and stablecoins on Ethereum, Base, Solana, and Arbitrum, there are also no protocol fees — so yes, trading those pairs costs you nothing. For other assets, a protocol fee of 85 bps (T5) down to 25 bps (T1 with staked EDGE) applies, but gas is still sponsored.
No. Definitive sponsors gas, so you can trade with zero ETH (or MATIC, SOL, etc.) in your wallet. You need only the source token you want to swap.
Yes. Gas sponsorship applies across all nine chains: Base, Arbitrum, Ethereum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB, HyperEVM, and Solana. You can switch chains in the interface and execute gasless swaps on any of them.
Definitive covers gas costs as part of its business model, offset by protocol fees on non-exempt trades. The platform was built by Coinbase Institutional Trading alumni who understand that operational friction (like managing gas balances across chains) is a major barrier for institutional users — and have structured the product to remove it.
Yes. Definitive supports Fireblocks, Fordefi, Safe, and Squads, and gas sponsorship applies for trades executed through these custody providers. The signing workflow may differ (Safe and Squads require multisig approval, Fireblocks uses its policy engine), but the underlying gasless execution is the same.
