Trading onchain without paying gas means executing blockchain transactions — swaps, limit orders, TWAP orders — without holding or spending native gas tokens like ETH, MATIC, or SOL. Definitive's onchain trading terminal sponsors gas on all nine supported chains, so you can trade with just the token you want to swap — nothing else in your wallet required.
Understanding why gas exists helps clarify why gasless trading is meaningful — and what it actually means technically.
What gas is. Gas is a fee paid to the validators and block producers who process transactions on a blockchain. Every transaction — a swap, a token transfer, a smart contract interaction — requires computational resources. Gas compensates the network for those resources.
Why you typically pay gas in the native token. Most blockchains require gas fees in their native currency: ETH on Ethereum, ETH on Base and Arbitrum (L2s), MATIC on Polygon, AVAX on Avalanche, SOL on Solana, BNB on BNB Chain. This creates a friction point: to trade any token on any chain, you first need to acquire and hold a balance of that chain's native token.
The operational burden of multi-chain gas management. For traders operating across multiple chains — or institutions managing multiple wallets across multiple networks — the requirement to hold gas tokens on every chain is significant overhead. You need to:
For a DAO treasury with five signers and positions on four chains, this is a non-trivial operational burden.
Why gas requirements deter new users. For someone new to a specific chain — or returning after a gap — realizing you can't swap your USDC because you have zero MATIC is a jarring experience. It requires a detour: bridge or buy MATIC, wait for it to arrive, then attempt the original trade. Gasless trading eliminates this friction entirely.
Gasless trading is technically sophisticated even though the user experience is simple. Here's how it works.
Meta-transactions and relayers. The foundational mechanism is meta-transactions: instead of submitting a standard transaction (which requires the sender to pay gas), you sign a message authorizing the action. A third party — a relayer — submits the actual transaction onchain and pays the gas cost. You sign the intent; the relayer handles execution.
EIP-712 signed messages. Most gasless implementations use EIP-712 typed structured data signing. When you click "swap" on Definitive, you're signing a structured message (not a full Ethereum transaction) that specifies: what you want to swap, how much, the acceptable price range, and an expiry. This signature costs nothing — it's a cryptographic operation that never touches the blockchain.
Definitive as the gas paymaster. On Definitive, the platform itself acts as the gas paymaster — it submits your signed trade instruction onchain and covers the gas cost. This is part of Definitive's business model: the platform absorbs gas costs in exchange for the fees generated on non-exempt trades, and the elimination of gas friction is a core product feature for institutional users.
ERC-4337 account abstraction (on EVM chains). On newer chains and for smart wallet users, Definitive also leverages ERC-4337 — Ethereum's account abstraction standard — which allows user accounts to pay gas in any token, or to have gas sponsored by a paymaster contract. This is the infrastructure that makes gasless execution possible at the smart contract level.
Solana's fee model. On Solana, transaction fees are extremely low by default ($0.00025 or less per transaction), but they still require SOL. Definitive's gas sponsorship covers these Solana fees as well — you can trade on Solana without holding SOL.

Step 1: Go to Definitive and connect your wallet Navigate to definitive.fi. Connect your wallet — any EOA (MetaMask, Rabby, Coinbase Wallet) or institutional custody solution (Fireblocks, Fordefi, Safe, Squads).
Check your wallet balance. You need only the token you want to trade. You do not need ETH, MATIC, AVAX, SOL, BNB, or any native token for gas.
Step 2: Select your chain Use the chain selector to choose where you want to trade. Definitive supports:
Gas is sponsored on all nine. Switch chains freely without managing gas balances.
Step 3: Choose your token pair Select the token you're selling and the token you're buying. Definitive's smart order routing searches 100+ DEXs and 15+ offchain PMMs for the best available price on the selected chain.
Step 4: Enter your amount Input your trade size. Definitive displays the estimated output, price impact, and any applicable protocol fees before you confirm.
Fee reminder: Major assets and stablecoins on Ethereum, Base, Solana, and Arbitrum trade at zero protocol fee. For other assets, fees start at 85 bps and decrease to 25 bps (T1 with staked EDGE). Gas is always zero.
Step 5: Select your order type Choose Market, Limit, TWAP, or Stop. All order types are gasless on all supported chains. For large trades, TWAP is recommended for price averaging. For precise entry/exit levels, use limit or stop orders.
Step 6: Sign the trade Review the trade details and click confirm. Your wallet prompts you to sign a message — not a transaction. This signature is a cryptographic authorization; it costs nothing and doesn't require gas.
Step 7: Definitive submits onchain Definitive takes your signed message, constructs the onchain transaction, and submits it to the network — paying gas from its own account. You see the trade execute in your wallet and in Definitive's interface within seconds (on fast chains like Base, Arbitrum, Solana) to minutes (on Ethereum mainnet during congestion).
Step 8: Confirm and track After execution, the traded tokens appear in your wallet. Definitive's post-trade dashboard records the trade with full details: fill price, route, fees, onchain hash, and PnL update.
Definitive's gasless execution covers all nine supported chains:
Ethereum (mainnet) The original DeFi chain. Highest liquidity for major assets. Gas fees are sponsored; Ethereum network congestion during peak periods can cause slower inclusion times but execution quality remains high.
Base Coinbase's L2 on the OP Stack. Fast, low native fees, rapidly growing DeFi ecosystem. Gasless on Definitive — particularly valuable since Base has become a primary memecoin and DeFi activity hub.
Arbitrum The leading Ethereum L2 by DeFi TVL. Deep liquidity for major assets and significant altcoin activity. Gasless execution on Definitive.
Optimism OP Stack L2. Strong native DeFi ecosystem. Gasless on Definitive.
Polygon High-throughput EVM chain. Low native fees, broad token support, active in RWA and gaming token ecosystems. Gasless on Definitive — particularly valuable since MATIC management was previously a friction point.
Avalanche C-Chain EVM compatible. Strong in institutional DeFi, particularly for asset tokenization and institutional-grade protocols. Gasless on Definitive.
BNB Chain High-volume chain with significant retail DeFi activity and broad token support. Gasless on Definitive.
HyperEVM Emerging EVM-compatible chain. Gasless on Definitive, allowing traders to access new opportunities without new gas management setup.
Solana Non-EVM chain with extremely fast finality and a large memecoin and DeFi ecosystem. Gasless on Definitive — no SOL required for trading.
Yes. Definitive sponsors gas on all nine supported chains. You need only the source token you want to swap. No ETH, MATIC, AVAX, SOL, BNB, or any other native token required.
There's no hidden catch. Gas costs are covered by Definitive as part of its business model, supported by protocol fees on non-exempt trades. For major assets and stablecoins on Ethereum, Base, Solana, and Arbitrum, there's also no protocol fee — so those trades truly cost you nothing. For other assets, a protocol fee applies (85 bps base, down to 25 bps at T1 with staked EDGE).
Yes. Gas sponsorship applies to trades executed through Safe, Squads, Fireblocks, and Fordefi. The signing workflow differs for multisig wallets (multiple approvals required), but the underlying gasless execution mechanism is the same.
Yes. Gasless trading removes the gas cost but doesn't inherently prevent MEV attacks like sandwich bots. Definitive routes through MEV-protected paths and offchain PMMs where possible, which reduces MEV exposure, but it's a separate protection from gas sponsorship. See MEV Protected Trading for how to configure MEV protection alongside gasless trading.
If Definitive's relayer infrastructure is temporarily unavailable, gasless trades cannot be submitted. You would not be able to trade via Definitive during that window. This is the key dependency of relayer-based gasless systems: the service provider's infrastructure must be operational. Definitive's reliability track record and infrastructure redundancy are part of the institutional-grade service it provides.
