How to Use a Smart Wallet for DeFi Trading

Apr 2026 · 9 min read

A smart wallet is a blockchain account governed by programmable logic — smart contract rules — rather than a single private key. For DeFi trading, smart wallets enable multisig approvals, spending policies, session keys, and gasless transactions that EOA (externally owned account) wallets cannot. Definitive's onchain trading terminal is natively compatible with major smart wallets including Safe, Squads, Fireblocks, and Fordefi.

Smart Wallet Setup

Smart wallets come in several forms. Setup varies by type, but the core steps are consistent.

Types of smart wallets relevant to DeFi trading:

Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe): the dominant Ethereum multisig. Requires M-of-N signers to approve transactions. Available on Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, and BNB.

Squads: the leading Solana multisig. Comparable to Safe but native to the Solana ecosystem with Solana-specific features.

Fireblocks: institutional-grade custody with programmable transaction policies, MPC (multi-party computation) key management, and exchange connectivity. Used by hedge funds, family offices, and DAOs.

Fordefi: institutional MPC wallet with customizable policy engine, role-based access controls, and DeFi-specific approval workflows.

ERC-4337 account abstraction wallets: a newer category (Biconomy, ZeroDev, Kernel, etc.) that enables features like social recovery, session keys, and gasless transactions natively at the wallet level.

Setting up a Safe (most common for DeFi traders):

  1. Go to safe.global and create a new Safe
  2. Select the chain (Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, etc.)
  3. Add signer addresses and set the threshold (e.g., 2-of-3 signers required)
  4. Deploy the Safe contract — this requires a gas payment from one signer's EOA (one-time setup cost)
  5. Record your Safe address — this is the address that holds funds and signs transactions

Setting up Fireblocks or Fordefi: These are institutional platforms with onboarding processes. Contact the providers directly for enterprise setup. Both support integration with Definitive through their DeFi gateways.

Connecting to DeFi Trading Platforms

Once your smart wallet is set up, connecting it to a trading platform requires a slightly different workflow than a standard EOA connection.

Connecting a Safe to Definitive:

  1. Go to definitive.fi
  2. In the wallet connection dialog, select the Safe / multisig option
  3. Enter your Safe contract address
  4. Connect with one of your signer EOA wallets — this wallet will sign transaction proposals
  5. Your Safe's token balances appear in Definitive's interface

How transactions work with a Safe: When you place a trade on Definitive, the platform generates a transaction proposal. Your connected signer EOA signs the proposal. If your Safe requires multiple signers, the other signers log in separately and countersign. Once the threshold is met, the transaction executes onchain.

Definitive's interface shows pending proposals awaiting signatures — so you can track multi-signer approval status directly from the trading interface.

Connecting Fireblocks: Fireblocks has a dedicated DeFi dApp connection feature (via WalletConnect or Fireblocks browser extension). Connect your Fireblocks workspace to Definitive, and transactions routed through Definitive will be submitted for policy approval through Fireblocks before execution.

Connecting Fordefi: Fordefi integrates with DeFi platforms through its browser extension, which intercepts transaction requests and routes them through Fordefi's policy engine. Install the Fordefi extension, connect it to Definitive as a dApp, and all trade executions will require Fordefi approval.

Executing Trades with a Smart Wallet

The trading workflow is similar to EOA trading, with the addition of the approval step.

Step 1: Navigate to Definitive with your smart wallet connected Ensure your smart wallet (Safe, Squads, Fireblocks, or Fordefi) is connected to Definitive. Your portfolio balances should be visible.

Step 2: Configure your trade Select order type (Market, Limit, TWAP, Stop), token pair, size, and parameters. Definitive routes through 100+ DEXs and 15+ offchain PMMs for best execution. Gas is sponsored — even for smart wallet transactions.

Step 3: Submit the trade for approval Click confirm. For Safe and Squads, a transaction proposal is created and submitted to the multisig's approval queue. For Fireblocks and Fordefi, the transaction is routed through the platform's policy engine.

Step 4: Collect required signatures (Safe/Squads) If your multisig requires multiple signers, notify co-signers that a trade is pending approval. Each signer logs in to Safe or Squads and countersigns. Definitive's interface shows signature status.

Step 5: Policy approval (Fireblocks/Fordefi) For Fireblocks and Fordefi, the transaction is evaluated against your configured policies — spending limits, destination whitelist, asset restrictions, time-of-day rules. Transactions that meet policy requirements auto-approve; others escalate for manual review.

Step 6: Onchain execution Once approvals are complete, the transaction executes onchain. Execution is identical to an EOA trade from Definitive's routing perspective — the same smart routing, the same PMM access, the same gasless mechanism.

Step 7: Post-trade reporting All trades executed through smart wallets are captured in Definitive's post-trade reporting. The full execution detail — fill price, route, fees, timestamp — is recorded with the smart wallet address as the executing account.

Security Considerations

Smart wallets provide significant security advantages over single-key EOAs, but they introduce their own risk vectors.

Multisig key management. For Safe and Squads, your security is only as strong as your signer key management. If all signers use single-key EOAs stored on hot wallets on the same device, your 3-of-5 multisig effectively has single-point-of-failure risks. Distribute signers across different devices, geographies, and key management systems.

Policy configuration for Fireblocks/Fordefi. Overly permissive policies defeat the purpose of using institutional custody. Configure spending limits, asset whitelists, counterparty restrictions, and time-based rules that match your actual trading parameters. Review policies regularly as your trading activity evolves.

Smart contract risk. Your smart wallet is a smart contract. If there's a bug in the contract code, your funds are at risk. Use well-audited, widely deployed contracts — Safe has $100B+ secured historically; Squads is the dominant Solana multisig. Avoid deploying custom or unaudited smart wallet contracts.

Transaction simulation before signing. Before approving a transaction proposal in your multisig, simulate it using a tool like Tenderly or Safe's built-in transaction simulation. This shows you exactly what the transaction will do onchain — what tokens move where — before any signer commits.

Session keys and delegation. Some ERC-4337 wallets support session keys that allow limited transaction authorization without full private key signing. This is useful for automated strategies but must be configured with strict scope limits (e.g., only trade ETH/USDC, maximum $10K per day). Poorly scoped session keys are a significant attack surface.

Revoke unnecessary approvals. Smart wallets often accumulate token approvals from past DeFi interactions. Regularly audit and revoke approvals you no longer need. Unrestricted approvals on large token balances are a persistent risk even if you're not actively using them.

Using Definitive with Smart Wallets

Definitive is purpose-built to support institutional and sophisticated traders — and smart wallet integration is a core part of that.

Why smart wallet users need a specialized trading terminal: Standard DEX interfaces are designed for EOA users. Smart wallet users — especially multisig users — face friction at every step: proposals that require multiple logins to sign, interfaces that don't surface pending approvals, no post-trade reporting for fund accounting. Definitive resolves all of this.

Gasless execution for smart wallets. Managing gas token balances across multiple chains is even more operationally complex for smart wallets than for EOAs. Definitive sponsors gas on all nine supported chains (Base, Arbitrum, Ethereum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB, HyperEVM, Solana) — eliminating the need to maintain native token balances in your Safe or Squads wallet.

Definitive Performer Addresses. For privacy-conscious institutional users, Definitive's Performer Addresses route trades through proxy addresses that are not directly linked to your primary Safe or Fireblocks vault address. This protects your trading strategy from onchain observers while maintaining full internal accounting.

Full order type support for smart wallets. TWAP, Limit, Stop, and Market orders are all available to smart wallet users on Definitive. DAO treasuries executing large TWAP orders, fund managers setting limit orders, and institutional traders using stop losses — all of these workflows are supported natively.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a smart wallet and an EOA?

An EOA (externally owned account) is a standard crypto wallet controlled by a single private key. A smart wallet is a smart contract account governed by programmable rules — multisig requirements, spending policies, session keys, social recovery, etc. Smart wallets offer significantly more security and control for institutional and sophisticated users.

Can I use Safe with Definitive across all supported chains?

Safe is available on most Ethereum-compatible chains that Definitive supports: Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, and BNB. For Solana, Squads is the equivalent multisig solution. HyperEVM compatibility depends on Safe's deployment status on that chain.

Does Definitive support ERC-4337 account abstraction wallets?

Definitive's smart wallet support focuses on Safe, Squads, Fireblocks, and Fordefi. Compatibility with specific ERC-4337 implementations depends on their ability to connect via standard wallet protocols (WalletConnect, MetaMask, etc.). Check the Definitive documentation or contact the team for specific ERC-4337 wallet compatibility.

How do I speed up multisig approvals for time-sensitive trades?

Pre-configure signing thresholds appropriate to urgency. For Fireblocks and Fordefi, set up auto-approval rules for routine trades within defined parameters. For Safe, consider using a 1-of-N threshold for smaller trades with a higher threshold for large positions. Pre-authorizing Definitive as a trusted destination in your policy engine can also accelerate approvals.

Is gas still sponsored when using a Safe or Fireblocks wallet on Definitive?

Yes. Definitive's gas sponsorship applies regardless of the wallet type — EOA, Safe, Squads, Fireblocks, or Fordefi. You do not need to hold native gas tokens (ETH, MATIC, etc.) in your smart wallet to execute trades through Definitive.
